Choose from a large selection of locally handmade mittens. From cashmere and wool to acrylic and blends, these one-of-a-kind creations are made from upcycled sweaters. Even the lining is made from secondhand fleece!
This season, proceeds from Mittens for Good will support two organzations:
Mittens for Good was started as a way for local mom and clinical social worker Amy Fantalis to cope with the stress of the pandemic. A portion of each sale goes to charity.
During Covid, clinical social worker Amy Fantalis decided to learn to make mittens from old sweaters. She was inspired by Bernie Sanders on stage that cold day in January of 2021 wearing his super warm handmade mittens. When she found out that he donated all of the money from his mitten memes to charity, Mittens for Good was born. Amy found a hand-me-down sewing machine and taught herself to sew! She collected upcycled sweaters and fleece from thrift stores, yard sales and her friends’ closets. Even the buttons she uses are bought secondhand—some are even vintage!
During the first season, Mittens for Good made over 100 pairs of mittens, exceeding that number every year. On average, Amy donates 50-75% of the proceeds to charity. Past recipients include Providence Animal Center, Media Food Bank, Chester Children’s Chorus and Philly Bully Team, as well as to Planned Parenthood. Two years ago almost all of the profits went directly to relief in Ukraine. Last year, she sent money to relief organizations in both Gaza and Israel, as well as to World Central Kitchen.
