Join Melinda Schwartz L.Ac., M.Ac., Dipl.Ac.—owner of Sacred Scarab Acupuncture in Narberth—for a workshop on Facial Gua Sha, highlighting ways to improve the look and health of your skin in a natural way.

Learn the basics of facial gua sha, a technique which is a gentle massage using a stone and facial oil to apply pressure and stimulate blood flow. Benefits include relaxation of muscles, smoothing of lines, increased blood flow, reduction of inflammation, and reduced puffiness.*

There’s an important distinction to be made between therapeutic gua sha, used as a part of traditional east Asian medicine, and facial gua sha. On the body it involves broad, vigorous strokes to bring out toxins, increase blood flow, and relieve tension; leading to the appearance of “sha” or transitory therapeutic petechiae which represents stagnated blood in the tissues. Facial gua sha comes from the same root, but has evolved over time to become its own art. It’s a more gentle, fine-tuned adaptation that focuses on individual muscles, fascia, lymphatic stagnation, meridian lines, and pressure points of the face. In this setting, gua sha encourages collagen production and helps the skin become more radiant as circulation is increased.

Please make sure you are hydrated and arrive at the event with a clean face. If you already have a gua sha tool and/or facial oil at home, you are welcome to bring them to use during the class. *NOTE: Attendees should be at least 16 years old. Anyone with inflammatory skin conditions (such as acne, rosacea, or eczema), recent sun exposure (especially sunburn), thinning areas of skin, or those on blood thinners should not perform facial gua sha and therefore, would not be a good fit for this class. Additionally, anyone who has had fillers or botox should wait at least three months after their procedure to do facial gua sha on those areas where they received injections.
