SHIFT · 252 Haverford Avenue · Narberth PA 19072

Support the Neema Project, a small nonprofit organization that unleashes opportunity for young women in Eastern Africa, by purchasing totes made from upcycled cement bags.

Students make grocery bags from upcycled cement bags and line them with African fabric (kitenge). For each bag they make, they receive an income that is saved for them. At the end of their third year in the Neema Project, these savings help them purchase a sewing machine and starter kit so that they can set up their own shop immediately after graduating.

About the Vendor

Neema is a vocational school for vulnerable young women in rural Kenya. Every year they welcome young women (age 15-20) and their children (about 50% of them have children) and for three years, they teach them how to be dress makers with a view to equipping them with skills and tools to lift themselves and their families out of extreme material poverty. Neema takes them all the way to national certifications to give them higher chances of employment. They also teach them catering and permaculture farming. A team of therapists are on staff to provide mental health support to the women and their families.

The organization is led by women and most of their staff are women from different Kenya tribes.
